about the book

I wrote this book after living and working in different parts of the world and seeing, again and again, how much we have in common – often hidden through lack of understanding or outright misunderstanding

Across cultures and borders, the same hopes, struggles, and questions kept appearing.

This book brings together those international insights with practical stepping stones toward a more peaceful and harmonious world, while also inviting personal reflection and growth.

Peace, I’ve come to believe, begins when we learn to see ourselves in one another.

Why I wrote Neighbor Imperative

–To make the case for everyone everywhere as our neighbor–

Throughout our lives we have lived with instilled hatreds, wars and rampant conflicts across the globe. Nuclear annihilation has become an ever-present threat. This is our reality. It, however, makes no sense. Millions upon millions of individual daily kindnesses are seemingly constantly being overshadowed by senseless killings.

We all have so much more in common than not. Our DNA is nearly identical. We want many of the same things in our lives for ourselves, our families. We, collectively, need to begin to treat our global neighbors with respect, cooperation, compassion and I dare say, love. Humanity’s future requires this improved way of thinking about each other. It’s a human imperative!

Now, the Back Story…

An evolving concept of neighbor has been building in my heart and in my mind for decades.

From time to time I have written pieces that have a connection with neighbors. Early on, many were never intended to be published. Rather, writing provided me an opportunity to explore themes and issues that I wanted to concentrate on in greater depth to better explore personally.

My international exposure beginning with two semesters at the Universidad de Costa Rica and living with a Costa Rican family was a marvelous launching pad for engaging the world beyond the United States. There, I realized I wanted to become of service in some way, some how for others in far greater need than I had ever witnessed previously.

After being on the receiving end of undergraduate studies at the University of Kansas and obtaining a master’s degree in international management, it was time to start giving back, being of service to others. In my life, gratefully, I have found many opportunities.

Several years ago, the idea of writing a book with selected unpublished essays came to mind. Since then, several new essays have been written to address additional issues I thought vital to include in this book. Neighbor was the central theme that unified what I most wanted to share with others. Hopefully, these essays will speak to you, the reader, in ways that further your own aspirations for inspired living on this truly amazing place we all call home.
